Integrating Community-Based Sea Turtle Conservation with Ecotourism

  • Undertake start-up workshop of stakeholders to inform them about the project and seek cooperation and collaboration

Global markets and the livelihoods of coastal communities in the WIO: Implications for sustainable coastal management

  • To examine the demands that the global market exerts on the coastal resources, users and managers of the resources and their implications on sustainable coastal management
  • To document the ways in which the aspects of global markets have been impacting the coastal area, its people and their livelihood
  • To explore the manner in which different coastal resource users and managers have been grappling with the impacts of global markets
  • To assess the vulnerability context of the poor majority in the coastal communities in terms of their livelihood, as a result of the impact of global market

  • Engage local communities in sea turtle conservation through patrols and monitoring, habitat rehabilitation (mangrove replanting and beach clean-ups) and conservation education
  • Conduct a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) to develop local community action plans for the conservation of marine turtles (and other fauna) and habitats
  • Characterize nesting beaches in areas where there are gaps and initiate organized community action
  • Develop a website and relevevant information tools to promote conservation of sea turtles in Kenya and the WIO region
  • Conduct a review of the current legislative and policy instruments on marine resources and make appropriate recommendations
